Monday August 31

Musica in downtown Akron

Ohio prodigy, John Marcel Williams and his sister, Margaret Williams perform on stage. They are playing the opening act for jazz trumpeter Josh Rzepka. The Williams' start at 7:30pm, with Josh Rzepka playing at about 8:30.

John, just turning 15 years old this month, is a veteran prizewinner in ten competitions. He placed in the coveted Guitar Foundation of America Competition twice, the East Carolina Guitar Competition twice, the MANC, the Rantucci Competition, and several Pittsburgh-based young artist contests, and was a semifinalist in the 2009 Parkening Competition. In addition, John has been a featured guest on several episodes of the regional arts television program, Arts Quest. His solo recital at Oberlin College last spring was met with an instantaneous, universal standing ovation. He will play works by Bach, Dyens, Rodrigo, and Assad.

Margaret, an experienced flamenco guitarist and dancer in addition to her classical guitar work, brings a special flair to her performances as well. She will play works by Bach, Villa-Lobos and Mertz. The Williams' are from Steubenville, OH.

Josh Rzepka, celebrating the release of his new CD, Midwest Coast, will be joined by Theron Brown, piano, Matt Charboneau, bass and Mark Gonder, drums.
